MTN Ghana has launched Mobile Mobile Month and assured customers of its commitment to expand payments through the Mobile Money system.
Mr. Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Mobile Money Manager for Corporate Business Development, explained during the launch that this year marks the 8th Anniversary of the mobile money month celebration, hence, the need for constant awareness creation and education.
He disclosed that the MTN Mobile Money platform has over 6.2 million active users (30 days), and over 75,000 active agents nationwide. He said the success of the Mobile Money service in Ghana is evident, and anticipates that through the activities scheduled for the month, more of Ghana’s unbanked population will sign onto the digital financial services platform.
Mr. Abdul-Majeed Rufai revealed that the world is changing at a faster pace than could ever be imagined, and said those of us trying to keep up with the pace of technological innovation demand a robust digital financial platform.
According to him, Mobile Money service is even more attractive and impactful, because, together with 16 partner banks, MTN has developed and deployed numerous innovative financial products aimed at convenience and safety, while supporting the drive towards a cashless Ghana.
He disclosed that as a result of feedback received from customers, this year, MTN, in partnership with Fidelity Bank, launched the Y’ello Save Account, which enables customers to save and earn 12% interest per annum on money saved.
He also said, MTN had earlier launched TBill4All in partnership with Ecobank to enable Ghanaians to buy Treasury Bills using their MTN Mobile Wallets. The Mobile Money Manager underscored that one of their biggest areas of focus is enabling payments while several payments are now available through the robust Mobile Money platform.
He said to further support Mobile Money payments, the “Tap2Pay” solution was introduced earlier in the year, with the use of Near Field Communications (NFC) technology. This, he said, is one of the easiest ways of making payments, as it eliminates the need to navigate through the Mobile Money menu to make a payment.
He indicated some of the activities lined up for the celebration includes, a stakeholders conference, campus activations at second cycle and tertiary institutions, a Hackathon App Competition, workshops with agents, regional/community activations, consumer promos, service center and connect store promos, while partner banks will also launch their own initiatives to reward customers who use the Mobile Money service to transact business.
