From Inusa Musah, Tema
Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, has charged the media to press duty-bearers to be responsible and accountable to the citizenry.
The media constantly throwing their searchlight on public servants, she explained, would result in effective work output and consciousness to serve the nation with good intentions.
In this regard, the Minister tasked the media to be involved in raising the awareness of citizens on issues such as public financial management, planning processes at the District Assembly level, and local government accountability.
Hajia Halima Mahama said these at the maiden Ministry of Information Town Hall meeting held in Tema, where she asserted that “the Local Government system in Ghana is designed to promote people-centered development in governance.”
She continued that “the local government service entails an active involvement of the local population in ensuring improved quality services from leadership, which includes greater participation of civil society and citizens in decision-making for effective consensus-building and active awareness.”
Educating further, the Minister said the District Assemblies are mandated by law, to hold public Town Hall meetings to share ideas affecting the locals, for urgent steps to be taken in addressing concerns raised.
She said: “The Town Hall meetings create the requisite environment to stimulate and demand accountability at the local governance level to enhance [the] decentralisation policy framework.”
Based on this background, she said her outfit, through the Social Accountability Unit, would pledge its support for programmes of this sort. On that note, she entreated all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to collaborate with the Ministry of Information to organise Town Hall meetings in their areas.
It is based on these pieces of information that the public need to understand that Hajia Halima Mahama called on the media to throw their headlights on duty bearers, who have been given the mandate to serve the people, deliver in their task, and obligatory roles.
The Tema Chief Executive, Felix Mensah Anang-La, on his part, touched on the issue of sanitation, and warned that his administration would soon be prosecuting persons engaged in the haphazard dumping of refuse.
On job creation, he entreated the “youth to exercise constraint, as the Assembly is vigorously working to provide jobs for the unemployed youth in the Metropolis.”
