Over 1,300 people have been displaced following a fire outbreak that occurred at Dagomba line in the Asokore Mampong municipality of the Ashanti region. According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the inferno comes barely a month after a similar incident in the same community.
Dagomba line is slum, which serves as a place of abode for a lot of youth who had traveled from the northern part of Ghana to the Ashanti region to seek greener pastures. Among them are scrap dealers, porters. Although the exact cause of the fire is not yet established by the Ghana Fire Service, the latter says it suspects an electrical fault.
One of the victims told The Chronicle that they were preparing to go back home because of the lockdown and that the incident has dealt a heavy blow to them as money and other belongings have been burnt.
Speaking to the media, Francis Darko-Kono, Ashanti Regional Operations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, speculated that the inferno could have been caused by electrical fault.
Darko-Kono explained to the media that they had a distress call upon which they dispatched a team to the fire scene. “I will say it is a minor one when compared with what happened last month. Previously, it was related to an electrical fault and this has also happened, so we will not rule out electrical fault – because if you look at what has burnt and the wiring connection, we may say it is an electrical cause.”
