The Association of Persons With Disability (PWDs) in the Asuogyaman District has told The Chronicle that the Coronavirus pandemic in Ghana is terribly telling on their upkeep.
The Secretary of the Asuogyaman PWDs explained that since the outbreak of the novel pandemic and the pressing economic challenge it has visited on the country, they are hardly able to have two square meals daily, for their dependents, who live in parts of the locked down areas in Ghana, are out of job.
Additionally, the Common Fund, which they depended on, the secretary said, is insufficient to help them cater for themselves at this time because their dependents are not able to support them.
Eva Andorful told The Chronicle at Aboasa where she and two members of the association received food items from Paul Asare Ansah, aspiring NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman Constituency, to support the members for a fortnight.
The Asuogyaman PWD has 600 registered members and the food items would suffice them all.
“We sent an SOS message when the lockdown in parts of the country was announced. We realised that if we didn’t think fast, we would starve to death because our dependants cannot go to work during the length of the period.
“And what Mr Paul Ansah has done for us, after sending him the short notice, has overwhelmed us,” Eva Andorful told The Chronicle at the sidelines.
Indeed, she said the SOS request was sent to several financial heavy weights, political parties and NGOs in the constituency “but only Mr Paul Ansah, as an individual, has responded,” and she said the association is still looking forward to hearing good news from their other recipients.
On his part, Paul Asare Ansah, whose benevolence has touched legions of lives in and outside the constituency, told The Chronicle that his quick response was because the PWDs were the hardest hit by the lockdown.
He said he was not oblivious, furthermore, that the aged had also been hit hard by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic that has had to inform the President to make people in Ashaiman, Tema, Accra, Kasoa and parts of the Ashanti Region locked for their safety.
“And so when they (Asuogyaman PWDs) sent me the request for food items to support them, I did not have to delay, and I hope these items can help them for two weeks,” he estimated.
The Technical Director of the Transport Ministry called on NGOs and the affluent in the constituency to go to the aid of the PWDs during this difficult period.
Similarly, Kwame Adu-Darkwa, another member of the NPP in the Asuogyaman District, has donated over thousand boxes of hand sanitizers and other medical materials to the area’s Health Directorate.
The items, he said were part of his support in flattening the COVID-19 pandemic.
The items were received by Samuel Kwame Agyekum, the area’s DCE, who lauded Kwame Adu-Darkwa for his gesture.
They both advised Ghanaians to avoid social contacts and obey current restrictions that are the immediate call to stop or slow the spread of the virus, which has claimed five lives in Ghana.
