The Deputy Volta Regional Public Health Director, Dr. Senanu Dzokoto, has applauded the effective communication skills of the Minister of Information, Mr. Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah, in the handling of COVID-19 issues.
He has, therefore, urged media practitioners to emulate the Minister by providing relevant and appropriate information on preventive measures to help ensure that people are not infected with the virus.
Dr. Dzokoto said the Information Minister handles COVID-19 issues as if he is a professor from the medical school, a skill he pointed out, had made education on the disease simple and easy for all to understand.
He stressed that communicating on the pandemic called for special communication skills as demonstrated by the Minister.
The Deputy Public Health Director, who was taking media practitioners from Volta and the Oti region through regional orientation programme in Ho, on COVID-19 said Mr. Oppong Nkrumah has been performing so well to the admiration of health practitioners.
Dr. Dzokoto said the Information Minister’s skills demonstrated so far had demystified the different interpretations people have in relation to the coronavirus , which he noted, had taken away fear and panic normally associated with outbreak of disease like the COVID-19. To him, it was important for media practitioners to be well equipped with information on the new disease so as to provide accurate and timely information to the public.
He also cautioned Ghanaians against politicization of the measures instituted by the government to control the spread of COVID-19, saying President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s public statements and announcements to protect the lives of Ghanaians should not be misunderstood to mean a political talk.
Dr. Dzokoto explained that President Akufo Addo’s statements and announcements relating to the relevant measures put in place to control the disease were scientific and important in controlling a pandemic such as the COVID-19. He called for support and cooperation from all Ghanaians to deal with the situation.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, a medical doctor by profession who heads the Public Health Education Committee to control the COVID-19 in the region, said the committee had worked hard with the support from the media in educating the people on the pandemic including social distancing, regular washing of hands with soap and the use of sanitizers.
He regretted that some of the people in the region have decided not to cooperate with authorities and measures put in place to control the disease, noting that as part of measures to ensure social distancing, the Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, have decided to ban market days and rather practice everyday market system.
“The lives of Ghanaians are more important to the president in these difficult times than any other thing, which is why he (President) has put in place all kinds of measures to control the spread of the coronavirus including social distancing,” he stressed.
