The Mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi has ordered the compulsory testing by section of traders at the PZ-Asempa area of the Central Business District (CBD). His position is explained in the fact that most of the traders there who deal in mobile phones, laptops, batteries and other electronic gadgets import their wares from neighbouring Togo and therefore must undergo testing as a result of the overcrowding at the mini market.
The mayor condemned the packed nature of the traders and buyers in the second hand phones and watches market compelling him to close down the mini market until the traders undertook compulsory testing before they could be allowed to resume trading activities again under the rotation system.
Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi admonished the chairman of the traders to work out modalities and see how best member traders could trade under the rotation system to discourage congestion.
The chairman of the traders, Kwabena Frimpong agreed to the position of the mayor and assured that the traders would ensure the compulsory testing directive is carried out to help contain the spread of COVID-19.
Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi leading the Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) was touring the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi on Thursday April 23, 2020 to sensitize hawkers, traders and commercial drivers on the need to observe the social distancing and nose mask wearing protocols in the wake of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The team toured most parts of the Central Business District (CBD) noted for its constant
congestion at all times.
The Mayor took time to educate the traders on the need to protect themselves by avoiding overcrowding in the Central Business District. Commercial drivers were also educated on the need to wear nose masks and not allow passengers without the mask to board their vehicles.
Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi indicated that the KMA has met with the leaders of the Central Market and come out with modalities on the rotation of the traders. He noted that the rotation system initially covered only traders who were selling food items but has now covered those who sell other commodities following the lifting of the ban on the partial lockdown.
He added that transport unions in the metropolis were being sensitised to educate their members on the need to wear the nose masks to protect the travelling and general public.
“We are not in normal times and therefore overcrowding at public places should be discouraged as much as possible to contain the spread of corona virus.
He also suggested that traders who sell mobile phones, laptops, batteries and other electronic gadgets in Adum along the Melcom street to adopt and indulge in the rotation system to avoid overcrowding.
