THE POLICE in Bolgatanga are on a manhunt for Mallam Ali, who is suspected to have murdered a final year student of Gowrie Senior High School in the Bongo District for rituals.
The police on Wednesday, April 19, 2020, found the decomposing body of the student (name withheld) in the bush in the Sherigu community, a suburb of Bolgatanga.
Confirming the incident to this reporter, Public Relations Officer of Upper East Regional Police Command, ASP David Fianko-Okyere, said the family of the deceased reported to the police that their son was missing.
The family narrated that the deceased was operating a tricycle, popularly referred to as ‘Mahama Can Do’ on commercial basis, which the Mallam sought his service.
However, the family said the boy did not return home and efforts to reach him on his cell phone also failed.
ASP Fianko-Okyere said after the family reported the matter, a team of police officers were dispatched to Sherigh community, which direction the family had information that the deceased had taken the Mallam to.
With the help of road users in the area, who complained about some strong stench emanating from the bush, the body was found in a decomposing state.
It was then discovered that both eyes of the deceased had been plugged out and part of his hair also shaved.
Multiple stabbing wounds were found on the body with the intestines gashing out – giving rise to suspicion that his murderer might have committed the crime for ritual purposes.
Disclosing to The Chronicle that the police had secured an arrest warrant from the court, ASP Fianko-Okyere was optimistic that the suspect, Mallam Ali, will soon be arrested and prosecuted.
Some residents of Bolgatanga, who know Mallam Ali very well, have said they were not surprised that he was linked to the crime because of his suspicious behaviours.
He has since fled his house at Sawaba in Bolgatanga.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased student has been deposited at the mortuary of Upper East Regional hospital, pending autopsy and investigation.
