The Chronicle can authoritatively report that information circulating on both mainstream and social media that the Presidency has written to the National Media Commission (NMC) ordering the latter to ban ‘mallams’ from operating on television stations are not true.
Reports were rife that such action had been taken by the NMC, the regulator of the media in Ghana, following a supposed directive from Jubilee House, the seat of government. However, checks by The Chronicle at the NMC have revealed that no such orders had been given.
A telephone conversation between a top official at the NMC and The Chronicle concluded that those reports “are fake news.”
Also, the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in a tweet, has rubbished such reports, especially those suggesting that the seat of government, Jubilee House, has written to NMC on the matter.
He clarified that he rather wrote to the Bank of Ghana and the NMC “to take note of the activities of money doublers on TV and act as appropriate to tackle it.”
“Kindly take note that… I have not said anywhere that the office of the President has issued such a letter neither have I said the NMC has issued such a ban,” he said.
https://t.co/lb0ZeaQEnR kindly take note that this story is false. I have never said anywhere that the office of the President has issued such a letter. Neither have I said that the NMC (or Authority as the writer suggest) has issued such a ban.

What I have said is that I have written to the Bank of Ghana and the National Media Commission to take note of the activities of money doublers on TV and act as appropriate to tackle it.

The Ghana Cedi which is produced under the authority of the BOG cannot and ought not to be duplicated. The BOG and NMC have a responsibility to take a view of such acts on our televisions and act accordingly.
