The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has given a hint on the gender of his running mate.
“I have a fair idea who I want my running mate to be and we will name him at the appropriate time,” Mr Mahama has said.
This disclosure settles the rather never-ending debate as to whether Mr Mahama would choose a man or a woman as his running mate. There have been debates about the choice of running mate for Mahama ahead of December elections, a debate which centres on the gender of the person.
Whereas names of some men in the party have been mentioned as potential candidates, others have also mentioned names of opposite sex.
Persons like Professor Kwesi Botchwey, Professor Joshua Alabi, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, have all come up as well as two women, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and Dr Zanetor Rawlings.
Meanwhile, the choice of a woman, seems to be following a prophesy from the founder and leader of the True Fire Prophetic Word Ministry (TFPWM), Prophet Nigel Gaisie, that Mahama would choose a woman.
It would be recalled that Prophet Nigel Gaisie, prior to the 2016 election prophesied that the NDC, and for that matter Mahama would win that election. He has again prophesied that Mahama will become President at the end of the December elections.
That notwithstanding, Mr Mahama in a virtual conversation on Thursday indicated while responding to a question on when he would announce his running that the party “is not behind time,” in announcing the person.
He went ahead to say that the leadership of the NDC is working assiduously on that and at the right time he would be announced.
He further stated that this is not the time to name a running mate because the country is not in normal times especially when the lucky person cannot be outdoored due to the current restrictions.
“Francis Xavier we are on track. We are not behind time, and the party is working assiduously. I have a fair idea who I want my running mate to be and we will name him at the appropriate time.
“We have timelines that we are working on. We have to put up our national campaign team. We have to name and outdoor our running mate. We have to publish and inaugurate our manifesto. These are timelines the party is working on.
“Currently we are getting ready to do training for our party agents. So, we are not late at all. The deadline for naming our running mate is when the Electoral Commission open nomination sometime in September. And so, we do have enough time.
“But, my brother, in the midst of COVID, you know, what is the use of naming a running mate? You can’t even outdoor him. The President is encouraging all of us to stay at home, that’s not an opportune time to come out and name your running mate,” he opined.
