As part of measures to curb the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Tain District in the Bono region, the Tain District Assembly has intensified public sensitization and education on preventive measures in markets, communities and other public places.
The public also has been urged to practice proper and consistent hand washing with soap under running water.
As a result, the Assembly has provided veronica buckets with soap at all public offices and owners of all other public places have been urged to do the same to ensure public safety.
In addition, the Assembly has rolled out plans to provide veronica buckets with soaps and tissue at all market centers in the district during market days to educate the people on proper hand washing.
Earlier in the week, the Assembly inaugurated the Public Health Emergency Committee pursuant to the directives from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to operationalise and monitor the president’s directives in the district.
Speaking at the inauguration, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Madam Charity Akua Foriwaa Dwommoh said the meeting was a tool to engage stakeholders in the district to execute the directives from of the president, which have been issued following the outbreak of Covid-19 to ensure a safe environment for all Ghanaians and other preventive measures that the Assembly needs to take.
She said following the outbreak of the disease, several engagements have held at all levels and it’s prudent for the Assembly to do the same to prevent the spread of the disease in the district and ensure public safety.
The DCE assured the people about the preparedness of the Assembly to partner all stakeholders to curb the dreadful impact of the disease. She urged the people to practice hand washing and ensure clean environments at their homes, markets and workplaces.
‘As per the directives of the president, all public gatherings have been banned in the district and the Assembly have put in measures to monitor’, she said.
The District Director of Health, Mr. Annor Duku Annor, disclosed the readiness of the directorate to manage cases of the virus at any given time.
He assured that there are personnel to deal with the outbreak should it spread to the district.
The Administrator at the District Hospital, Mr. Aziz Abubakri also assured the public that the hospital is prepared to manage the disease. He said the hospital has set up isolation rooms for suspected cases and the staff is prepared to handle suspect cases at any time.
He urged the public to report persons who exhibit symptoms similar to Coronavirus to the nearest health facility for immediate medical attention.
Techiman Assembly to distribute 2,000 face masks to residents
Meanwhile, the Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region has procured 2,000 face masks to be distributed to residents.
The Assembly has also launched a programme dubbed “Operation Wear Your Mask” to encourage and enforce the use of nose masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the Municipality.
The Techiman Municipal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Eric Asiedu, has told the media that anyone found violating the directive will be sanctioned.
“We will make sure that everyone in Techiman wears the facemask even before he or she enters the market or a public place.
“If anybody goes contrary to the Presidential directives, we will deal with the person in accordance with the Restrictions Act”, he said,
The Ministry of Health in a statement on April 25, 2020, directed the compulsory wearing of facemasks in public, in compliance with the Public Health Act.
“Pursuant to section 169 of the Public Health Act, 2013 (Act 851), the Minister responsible for Health by an Executive Instrument (E.I.61) declared COVID-19 a public health emergency. Section 170 (1) provides that the Minister of Health may order an individual to take a preventive measure in respect of public health matters,” it said.
Before its directive, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, had enforced a compulsory wearing of face masks in the region.
It said notices of “NO FACE MASK, NO ENTRY” should be visibly displayed at vantage points; including offices, lorry stations, shops, markets, malls, banks and pharmacies, among others.
Sunyani East MP donates to health directorate
The Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, who doubles as Majority Chief Whip, Mr Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh has donated items worth GHC 40,000 to Sunyani Municipal Health Directorate for distribution to 38 public and private health facilities in the constituency to augment the fight against the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
The items include; 4000 bottles of hand sanitizer and 10 boxes of facemasks. The MP also gave out 60 bottles of hand sanitizer, a box of gloves, two veronica buckets, a basin, 12 bottles of royal natural cocoa powder and an infra-red thermometer provided by the Ministry of Health for distribution to the health facilities.
Addressing the media, the MP said that the coronavirus outbreak has forced him to return to the constituency to help in the fight against the virus hence the donation.
“We cannot depend on the government alone in this fight since it is also the individual’s responsibility to protect oneself’’, he said and charged the public to strictly adhere to the presidential directives as well as the ministry of health measures, which include frequent hand washing and usage of hand sanitizers.
Receiving the items, Dr. Paulina Appiah, Sunyani Municipal Health Director expressed appreciation for the legislator’s contributions towards combating the pandemic.
She gave assurance that the items would be distributed equitably to the various health facilities. She urged the general public to comply with the directives in order to contain the spread of the virus.
The Chairman of Society of Private Mental and Dental Practitioners, Dr. Albert Amankwaa, on behalf of the private health centers thanked the MP and called on other benevolent individuals and institutions to emulate the gesture.
