Aguero has undergone surgery on a lateral meniscus injury in his left knee in Barcelona and is set for up to seven weeks on the sidelines.
A picture the Argentine posted on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon showed him in his hospital bed with the caption: ‘Everything went well, and I’ll soon begin recovery. A big thanks to Dr Cugat and his team – and to all of you for your support.’
Pep Guardiola has offered up Ilkay Gundogan as a surprise short-term replacement for Sergio Aguero. Gabriel Jesus will take over predominantly but Guardiola knows he must rotate his options for the remainder of the season.
Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne have acted as false nines in the past but Guardiola believes Gundogan could offer a different alternative.
‘We don’t have any doubts about Gabriel,’ Guardiola said. ‘The only doubt we have is that not one single player can play every three days.
‘Raheem can play in this position, even Gundogan and Bernardo. Not like a (proper) striker but we can use them.’
City – who have comfortably beaten Arsenal and Burnley over the last week – are again set to shuffle their pack when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
