Alumni of the University Hall – Katanga, of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday July 3, 2020 donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) and the KNUST hospital to aid the fight against COVID -19.
The items, consisting of facemasks, goggles and lab coats were estimated to cost GHc35,000.
Dr. Onasis Owusu Ansah, a Lecturer at the Mathematics department of KNUST, who presented the items on behalf of the association, indicated the need to protect frontline workers against the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the donation was meant to keep them safe and thanked them for the good work and efforts at fighting against the pandemic.
The Katanga Alumni association, which consists of past students of the KNUST who were affiliated to the University Hall, with branches across the globe have been involved in several charity works, including donations to orphanages, charity institutions and an annual donation to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.
Prof. Richard Odame Philips, director of KCCR, thanked the association for their timely intervention and the appropriateness of the items, as it met their needs and hoped it will go a long way to protect them and to enable them provide mandatory services as the disease is fast spreading.
Speaking on the challenges being faced by the centre, Prof. Odame Philips pointed out the pressure from those requesting testing to meet their expectation as some wanted results within the shortest possible time.
He said these pressures were in the face of the fact that some equipment had developed faults in the line of their work, as they have been used for a long period and needed to be repaired.
The KCCR director mentioned that the centre needed new equipment to meet the needs that would arise as the disease kept spreading.
The administrator of the KNUST hospital, Mr. Baah Boateng was appreciative of the gesture and asked that other associations and well-meaning individuals follow suit and come to their aid, as the items were consumables and more will be needed in the course of the fight against the pandemic.
