The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised he would do the extraordinary to guard Ghanaians against the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has sent the world’s most powerful nations to their knees.
Mr. Mahama said the next NDC government “…will restore economic prosperity in this country, and we will protect our people from the Coronavirus.”
He continued: “Look at the number of people who are dying from the Coronavirus; the number of people who have been infected. This government has failed in its Coronavirus response, and so NDC is going to come and put things right.”
Mr. Mahama’s recent comment does not deviate from the initial and consistent stance of himself and the NDC as a political party.
Apart from criticising government every step of the way of governance, the NDC put together what it called NDC COVID-19 Response Team, whose work, Ghanaians were told, would guide the party’s efforts and response to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
The flagbearer in particular said of the team that they would lead the party’s public advocacy and sensitisation activities on the COVID-19.
Issues were raised on the NDC’s move to have a parallel team aside that of the government, and on top of that, their leader, on a regular basis, holding live public sessions to address issues in the fight against the pandemic.
Mr. Mahama’s assertion has been described by some social media users as weird and one coming from a desperate opposition leader who would promise heaven and earth to win political power.
Meanwhile, questions are on the lips of sections of the public on what positive contributions the team had brought to bear in the government’s fight against the pandemic.
On the contrary, while the opposition party is always finding fault with government’s combat, the latter’s efforts have been commended globally, with some countries following the steps of Ghana to fight the coronavirus.
In April, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned against politicising the COVID-19 fight.
According to him, using the pandemic to score political points was dangerous and would only result in many more body bags.
At the time of filing this report, Ghana had recorded a total number of 39,642 cases of the novel Coronavirus. Out of the number, 36,384 have recovered, but 199 have unfortunately succumbed to the virus.
Mr. Mahama was addressing the media on Wednesday, after registering to be a voter in the exercise which ended yesterday. But, the Electoral Commission says it would undertake a mop-up exercise tomorrow and Sunday.
Speaking to the media, former President Mahama told Ghanaians that their vote is their power. Thus, he urged people who were yet to register to do so and kick out the Akufo-Addo government.
“Everybody should register. Your vote is your power. Let’s register and kick out this non-performing government,” he said.
In his speech, Mr. Mahama claimed the Akufo-Addo government had abandoned uncompleted projects and not been able to fulfil its promises.
“It’s been years of abandoning projects; years of failed promises; One Village One Dam has not materialised. All the dams have dried up in the dry season. Most districts do not have any factory yet. And yet it’s all been propaganda, propaganda and propaganda. Ghanaians have seen through it, and on 7th December, 2020, they are going to exercise their franchise to kickout this government. We will come back,” he narrated.
