The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for united political support towards the fight against the secession incidents in the Volta Region.
According to the party, the attack was on the sovereignty, if not the security, of the state, as such, needed the unflinching support of all the political parties to fight it.
The NPP’s general scribe, John Boadu, addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday, explained that the coming together of all the political parties against the group would send a strong signal to them that they did not have the support of any political party.
“We, hereby, call on all political parties to join in this national exercise to assist the government and all other agencies to deal with this development comprehensively.
“The usual tendency of political parties to attempt to make political capital out of every situation should be eschewed from this front. We should not joke with such things that border on our national security.
“This is not about the NPP it is about the safety and security of every Ghanaian. What we need is a united response to the developments to demonstrate to the few troublemakers that we all will not condone any efforts by any persons to create tensions and insecurity in any part of our beautiful Republic.
“We stand ready to assist the government, in any way we can, to engage, in particular, the youths of some of the towns mentioned as targets of the unfortunate acts, with a view to help build [a] deeper understanding of the facts and the history to forestall any misinformation,” he stated.
Mr John Boadu said violence and attacks would not be an acceptable approach to advancing any argument in the Ghanaian democracy.
He added that the NPP had joined voices with all well-meaning Ghanaians to speak up against the developments, and encouraged the government to deal with the matter in accordance with the law, and with good conscience.
As at Monday September 28, law and order had been restored in the affected regions, the Ghana Police Service said yesterday.
“The New Patriotic Party has further observed comments by several traditional and religious leaders, condemning the developments and calling on the government to be resolute in dealing with it once and for all. As a responsible political party, we believe these are calls in the right direction. The NPP hereby condemns the acts of violence, attempts to attack sensitive installations, and the attacks on security agencies under the guise of a secession movement. Such developments are shameful and unacceptable in any country, let alone, a functioning democracy like Ghana that boasts of an enviable track record on the African Continent.
“The historical accounts show clearly that the claims being made by the proponents of this agenda have got their facts totally wrong in the first place. Additionally, the geographic areas that the perpetrators seek to extend their activities to, in some cases, even fall outside the original areas that were involved in uniting with Ghana.”
Giving an update on the “Western Togoland Attack”, the Service reiterated that adequate security was on the ground in the affected areas in the Volta, Oti and Eastern regions and all other parts of the country.
According to the Ghana Police Service, life had returned to normal, as residents were going about their daily activities without fear of insecurity.
The Service added in the update on its Facebook page that “the vehicles, weapons and other items seized or stolen by the “elements” on Friday 25th September 2020 have also been retrieved.
“Some persons believed to be key in the attack on the North Tongu District Assembly, Police Stations and Officers have also been arrested and undergoing interrogation. The thirty-one (31) persons earlier arrested have provisionally been charged and presented in court for allocation.
“The general public is being assured to remain calm as [the] security agencies will continue to count on their assistance to arrest all perpetrators to face the law.”
To begin his address, Mr John Boadu extended the condolences of the party to the family of Alhaji Fuseini Maiga, Founder of the party’s Nasara Wing, which sad event occurred in the late hours of Sunday, September 27, 2020.
“The party, accordingly, extends its heartfelt condolence to his immediate family, particularly, his three (3) wives and fourteen (14) children. The NPP equally commiserates with his close associates, and, indeed, with the rank and file of the party’s Nasara Wing for this incalculable loss,” he added.
