The Independent Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority of Ghana, Professor Douglas Boateng, has lauded efforts by Ghana in the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus.
He said per the Corona Meter Update as at October 19, 2020, Ghana’s current official recovery rate is 98.5%, which is well above the Global recovery rate of 74.7%, Africa (82.1%) and South Africa (89.8%) benchmarks.
He disclosed that active cases in percentage of recorded infections for Ghana is a remarkable lower rate of 0.8% against 22.5% globally, 15.5% in Africa, and 7.6% in South Africa.
Africa’s first-ever appointed Professor Extraordinaire for supply and value chain management (SBL UNISA) also pointed to 0.66% death rate of recorded infections, which is well below the global (2.8%), African (2.4%) and South Africa (2.6%) benchmarks.
Prof. Boateng explained in an electronic mail to The Chronicle that the comparative data is a clear indication that Ghana, as a nation, is definitely doing “something right.”
The renowned supply and value chain expert urged Ghanaians to continue to protect each other as a “citizenry duty” in the face of our fragile healthcare system, which is currently not in a position to cope with a major upsurge in “hospitalisations” associated with serious and critical cases.
He reminded Ghanaians that the success of the “lives versus livelihoods” strategy is very much dependent on every citizen continuing to strictly adhere to the safety protocols in the constant wearing of the “right” face mask, social distancing at public and workplaces, frequent hand washing, sanitising and improved personal hygiene, and proper ventilation in enclosed areas.
According to the South Africa-based Ghanaian supply and value chain professor: “If we collectively work at it, we can limit the infection cases and continue to keep the associated fatalities below 1%.”
He noted that there was hope to stay safe and alive.
