The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South in the Ahafo Region has urged assembly members to help prevent violence in the 2020 general elections in the district.
The DCE, Robert Dwomoh Mensah, said this in an exclusive interview after the assembly held its general meeting at Hwidiem, capital of the district, to discuss pertinent issues to foster development.
According to the DCE, assembly members, who are key stakeholders, must play critical roles to avert any form of violence before, during and after this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections, scheduled for December 7.
He explained that assembly members must intensify education on election violence in their electoral areas to help residents know the need to stay away from such acts which are unlawful. “Highlight the consequences of election violence to them,” he stated.
He stated that the assembly members must be vigilant to sense persons who try to foment any form of riot which can potentially lead to violence. He told them to have their ears on the ground to easily detect people with such destructive ideas.
The DCE, who doubles as Chairman of District Security Council (DISEC), added that assembly members must be quick to relay information related to election violence to the police for swift action.
“Don’t shield any person who plans to tamper with the serene atmosphere the election is expected to have,” he urged them.
He mentioned that currently the district was enjoying peaceful atmosphere due to some measures put in place by the DISEC, and that there was the need to maintain and enhance it to tell the world that election violence is now a thing of the past.
Robert Dwomoh Mensah, in addition, said damages election violence brings to the district are unbearable, so all stakeholders must join forces to end it, beginning from this year’s elections. By so doing, he continued, the development residents are calling for would be available, because investors will begin popping up.
He assured the people of the district of violence-free elections this year, because the DISEC had instituted, and was still adding prudent measures which residents can attest to. “EC registration and exhibition exercise in the district were successful as compared to years back, although on day one of registration, violence emerged at Acherensua,” DCE Robert Dwomoh Mensah stated.
