The Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Osei Bonsu Amoah, has cautioned members of the Adamrobe community in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region against abandoning their physically challenged children.
According to information gathered by The Chronicle, the Adamrobe community is arguably having a large number of physically challenged persons.
Even though the cause or causes leading to the unfortunate situation in the farming community which shares a boundary with Oyibi in the Greater Accra Region is or are yet to be established, parents, for reasons best known to them, have neglected their physically challenged children.
To this end, the Deputy Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akwapim South Constituency, has cautioned the residents to put a stop to the practice.
He explained that the ruling government had increased the disability fund from 2 percent to 3 percent, with a sharp innovation of disbursement through the acquisition of working tools to ensure economic sustainability.
The Akwapim South Constituency MP, who is affectionately known in the political atmosphere as OB Amoah, made the remarks when the Akuapem South Municipal Assembly presented various items to some physically challenged persons in the area.
The items include sewing machines, hairdressing equipment, stocked containers, deep freezers, scholarships, and many others to the disabled
He indicated that the items, which are expected to be religiously used by these physically challenged individuals, would go a long way to improve their living standards through sustainable economic activities.
The deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development indicated that the standard of living of PWDs must be improved by eliminating the gap between such persons and ordinary citizens.
He asked the general public to desist from addressing persons who live with disabilities as “disabled.”
O.B. Amoah promised the readiness and commitment of the government to pay more attention and offer support to persons living with disabilities, in order to disabuse the notion that persons with disability are not important in national development.
He further encouraged the people in the area to take advantage of the free school policies to help people with disabilities, and shy away keeping their physically challenged children in their rooms for lack of money or otherwise.
The soft-spoken MP passionately appealed to individuals and private entities to complement the government’s efforts through donations to such persons.
He noted that the 3% of the Common Fund for persons with disability is allocated to help address the several challenges that confront these persons in the various parts of the country, and, therefore, cautioned the authorities to desist from diverting the limited funds allocated to PWDs.
Meanwhile, the MP, last Thursday, filed to represent the people of Akwapim South Constituency under the flag of the New Patriotic Party for the fourth consecutive time.
The MP, who first contested the seat in 2008, has expressed confidence of the NPP winning the 2020 election, following the fulfilment of promises made by the party prior to the 2016 elections.
Even though he claimed the party would record another resounding victory, he called on all parliamentary aspirants to work tirelessly in order to have majority representation in parliament to help the agenda of the president.
