The Overlord and Paramount Chief of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Sakite II, has confirmed the upgrading of roads by the Akufo-Addo government.
According to the revered Chief, he could confirm, for example, that roads in his area, and by extension Koforidua and the Eastern Region, have or are being rehabilitated.
Nene Sakite II said this yesterday at Akuse in the Eastern Region, where President Akufo-Addo commissioned the Kpong Power Station Retrofit project.
“Mr President, I want to commend you for the works going on around Manya Krobo, as well as the [Eastern] Region. IF you travel to Upper Manya Krobo today, the roads, the famous Asesewa market, has been completely rehabilitated. In Lower Manya Krobo too, most of our roads are been rehabilitated. Now the Easter Region. Since I took over from Osagyefo, I can now comfortably confirm the rehabilitation of roads in our regional capital. So much progress being made in Koforidua. I want to say Mr President, ayekoo.
The event saw the commissioning of the newly-retrofitted Kpong Power Generating Station, which is said to guarantee another 30 years of operation.
The President, in his address, described the development as another successful manifestation of the government’s commitment to guarantee the efficiency, sustainability and reliability of the country’s power generating plants.
According to him, the completion of the retrofit restores that power station into “as new” a condition, and “guarantees the country 30 more years of operation.”
The President told the gathering that barely a fortnight ago, he commissioned the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) second utility-scale, grid-connected, 6.5-megawatt Solar Power Plant in Lawra, Upper West Region.
“Together, they are further testimony of our determination to ensure the availability of reliable power supply to spur on our socio-economic development,” he added.
The Kpong Generating Station first turned on its turbines in 1982, and, since then, its four generating units, producing 160 megawatts of electricity, has contributed significantly to lighting up homes, and powering the economy, not only of Ghana, but of other countries in West Africa.
“That is why the conscious decision by the Volta River Authority to rehabilitate this power station, after some 30years of operation, is laudable and should be an example to other state institutions entrusted with public assets,” the President said.
He continued: “the completion of this project is further proof, if any were needed, of the expertise of Ghanaian engineers and technicians in their ability to administer new technologies for the effective management of our power plants. It is particularly gratifying that, in spite of the disruptions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the contractor, VRA, and the consultants were able to complete this project within a reasonable time frame.”
At the same event, the President also launched the distribution of the 500,000 improved cook stoves project.
It will be recalled that during the 2nd Africa Climate Change Summit held in October 2019, in Accra, President Akufo-Addo indicated how the effect of climate change was undermining Africa’s ability for growth and development, and pledged the commitment of his government towards taking practical and proactive steps to mitigate the impact of climate change on the planet.
A major programme of action of the government is, thus, the adoption of cleaner cooking solutions by scaling up the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in households.
“I am happy to inform you that significant progress has been made, and very soon the programme for the LPG Cylinder Recirculation Model, which will ensure wider use of LPG throughout the country, will be launched,” he said.
The President continued: “Since it will be difficult to have all households switch to the use of LPG, in the short term, our strategy is to promote the use of two million improved and efficient wood-fuel stoves as an interim measure, until such time that all households eventually migrate to LPG or electricity as main cooking fuels.”
President Akufo-Addo explained that the use of these improved and efficient charcoal stoves, coupled with the ongoing reafforestation programmes, had the potential to reduce significantly the emission of carbon dioxide and the rate of deforestation in the country.
