The KomfoAnokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi committed a total of GHc25,548,003.65 in the procurement of state-of-the-art equipment over the past four years.
The procurements were funded through the facility’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF).
The Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, who disclosed this feat when the Board members of KATH, headed by Ambassador Nana EffaApenteng,recently inspected the facility.
Among the newly installed equipment are; 128 slice Siemens C.T. Scan,(Radiology Department of the Accident and Emergency unit); Vitros 5600 Biochemistry Analyser, Endoscopy machine, Echo machine, Electro Convulsive Therapy Machine (Psychiatry unit), Dental Induction Casting Machine at the Oral Health directorate and Surge Protectors for the two newly installed Oxygen plants.
The KATH CEO explained that GHc2,278,670.50 was expended in the procurement of equipment in 2017 and further made GHc8,656,188.00 worth of procurement in 2018.
About GHc7,330,368.15 worth of equipment was procured while GHc7,282,777.00 including GHc719,308.00 spent on special COVID-19 procurements in 2020.
Dr. Owusu-Danso said the 128 slice Siemens C.T. Scan cost GHc2,237,000.00 while the BiochemistryAnalyser was acquired through a special arrangement, termed “placement”
He said the endoscopy machine cost 84,206.90 Euros while three Echo machines cost GHc746,235.00 with the Electro Convulsive Therapy machine acquired at GHc246,665.07.
The Restorative Unit of the Oral Health Directorate now has a GHc33,253.00 Dental Induction Casting equipment installed, while about 14 MCG Surge Protectors have been procured at GHc717,732.35 for the facility’s Oxygen plants.
The equipment procured has enhanced quality health delivery at KATH over the years.
At the Radiology Directorate, the head, Dr. Mrs. Badu Peprah, said a total of 500 cases had since October this year been recorded with the newly acquired 128-Slice Siemens C.T. scan, which is an upgrade of a previous 64-Slice model.
She said the machine, which provides accurate diagnosis and ensures safety of patients is used for imaging of head injuries, stroke, cardiac attacks, brain, abdominal and chest scans.
Dr. Ruth Owusu Antwi of the Psychiatry unit explained that electro convulsive therapy (ECT) machine is useful for the treatment of all Post-Partum Mental Disorders (PSD) and those not responding to psychotropic medications.
She indicated that the machine helps early recovery which in normal treatment takes between six to eight weeks.
Dr. Owusu Antwi also said the ECT has enabled the treatment of 18 patients per week.
