The headmaster of Ada Senior High School, Kojo Ayibor, has observed that the absence of decent accommodation for teachers on campus is adversely affecting discipline and academic performance.
Lately, a significant number of teachers have been posted to the school by government, but Mr Ayibor explained that the absence of a decent accommodation on the school’s premises for the tutors could be blamed for teacher absenteeism or lateness. He said most of the teachers stay far away from the school and have to board either a car or ride a pillion daily to and from school.
“Lateness to school or absenteeism means loss of instructional hours and that, of course, will affect academic performance and discipline,” Mr Ayibor lamented at the launch of the school’s 60th Anniversary celebration.
Mr Ayibor was addressing old students of the school during the launch. The school has churned out astute old students working in various spheres of life. Some of the notable old students are; Adzoteye Akrofi Larweh, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for West Ada, Dr Kotei Dzanie, a former Member of Council of State and the Presiding Methodist Bishop of Accra Diocese.
The headmaster also mentioned the completion of a fence wall as another worry to the school.
The construction of the wall was started by the old students’ association but has been stalled for some time now. He was worried about intruders easily accessing the school to steal.
“We have lost the school’s data because our laptops and computers have been stolen by thieves. We will be glad if you (Old Students’ Association) can pool your resources together to help complete the fence wall so as to protect our properties and the students.
“Also, in future, I hope you will consider putting up few bungalows on campus to help accommodate some of our teachers who travel from far places to school. The school humbly welcomes the benevolence of corporate Ghana and government to support the school with a teachers’ quarters,” the headmaster pleaded.
In spite of the challenges, Mr Ayibor was quick to mention that students’ performance in elective subjects, over the period, have been encouraging but with more room for improvement in the core subjects.
The President of the Old Students’ Association, Gideon Carlos Akweh, said that for the school to get to the best standards in education, old students with financial muscle would have to come on board to assist their alma mater.
“Already, the Nimeli (reference to all old students) have helped to build some parts of the fence wall and we are hoping to complete it this year. We are now 60 years and it is our expectation that our school will be one of the best in the region and across the nation,” he added.
He ceased the moment to advise the students against all forms of social vices if they want to become the next crop of leaders the country can pride itself in.
The 60th Anniversary celebration comes off in November this year and it would be celebrated under the theme: ‘Senior High Education in Ghana: the role of stakeholders in sustaining ADASCO beyond 60’.
