Unlike some countries where security personnel act swiftly at the mention of crime to ascertain its validity, the Criminals Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service is rather refuting claims of initiating an investigation into wrongdoings by the National Security.
It would be recalled that this paper, in its Wednesday, May 26, 2021 edition carried a story that “A team of crack detectives drawn from the Headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service have been dispatched to Asankragwa in the Western Region to conduct forensic investigation into the reported raid of a hotel by persons identified to have come from the National Security Secretariat in Accra.”
The story, which was headlined “CID PROBES NATIONAL SECURITY …over raid at a hotel at Asankragwa & alleged theft of huge sums of money”, chronicled how some National Security operatives from Accra who were welding side arms and AK 47 stormed the X and D hotel in the Asankragwa area, sometime on Friday May 7, 2021 allegedly tampered with the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) security camera, took out the CCTV system recorder and some unspecified amount of money.
An immigration officer, who was also at the scene was beaten mercilessly for making enquiries into the identities of these National Security Operatives.
The Chronicle, therefore, reported that detectives drawn from the Crime Scene Management Unit and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), backed by heavily armed personnel of the Operations Unit at the Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene to establish or otherwise, if there are traces of finger impressions and related clues as evidence of the alleged crime committed.
Shockingly, the CID has denied ever initiating an investigation into the alleged crime.
In a 4-paragraph release, the CID said they are rather investigating criminal activities such as illegal mining (galamsay), illegal possession of firearms and other related activities of some Chinese which occurred in Asankragwa in the Western Region and Enchi in the Western North Region.
It has interestingly directed the public to disregard the story published by The Chronicle which sought to uncover crime. Read the police’s press released which was duly signed by the Director of Public Affairs DSP Juliana Obeng.
1. The attention of the Criminal Investigation Department (C.1.D) of the Ghana Police Service has been drawn to a publication by the Chronicle Newspaper on Wednesday May 26, 2021, with the headline “CID probes National Security” over a raid at a hotel at Asankragwa in the Western Region and alleged theft of huge sums of money.
2. The CID administration wishes to state on authority that; a. The CID is not probing the National Security as stated on the front page and page three (3) of Chronicle Newspaper edition as stated above.
b. The CID has rather taken over the investigation of criminal activities such as illegal mining (galamsay), illegal possession of firearms and other related activities of some Chinese which occurred in Asankragwa in the Western Region and Enchi in the Western North Region.
3. The CID administration, therefore, entreat the public to disregard the above-mentioned publication by the Chronicle Newspaper.
