Torgbuiga Mawufeame Fugah, President of the Council of Ewe Chiefs in Ashanti, Bono and Ahafo regions has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to be “transparent, impartial and truthful in the conduct of the elections to reflect the actual will of the people, because
we have only one Ghana, one nation and one common destiny” to safeguard and keep intact.
He said the conduct of general elections in the country is the sole responsibility of the EC and no matter how arduous and onerous the task of the commission is, every voter expects to go through the election process peacefully. Addressing a durbar of Ewe chiefs and Ewe communities from Ashanti, Bono and Ahafo regions last Saturday, in Kumasi, Torgbuiga Fugah said politicians and their parties should exercise restraint and be circumspect in their
pronouncements, and called on the electorate and party supporters to be “careful in the manner in which they conduct themselves”.
Prof. Joshua Alabi, a leading member of the NDC and Campaign Manager of former President and flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, said everything is already pointing to an NDC victory in the December elections. He explained that ideally, the NDC
needs no vigorous campaign like the party is doing now, because of the realities on the ground, but it is necessary to change the mindset of the “innocent voters”.
Prof. Alabi said only innocent people would believe promises like “one village, one dam”, “one constituency, one million dollars”, “one child, one egg daily” and emphasised that the NDC and its flagbearer would not promise what they cannot deliver.
Madam Anita De-Sossou, of the NDC, who also doubles as the National Patron of the Volta Caucus, a pro-NDC group, in a speech stated that she was excited by the large gathering of mainly Ewes and is encouraged by the various speeches or exaltations by the traditional
leaders, which are all testimonies of Ewes’ sense of purpose and togetherness.
Madam De-Sossou appealed to all the Ewe communities in the various regions and all lovers of the NDC to come out in their numbers to vote on Election Day, stressing that “a vote for the NDC is a vote for oneself”. Mr. Alex Sawyer Ativor, a former Regional NDC Vice Chairman and currently the Regional Patron of the Caucus, explained that the Volta Caucus is an affiliate of the NDC and the aim is to ensure that anybody from the Volta region
resident in other regions is encouraged and allowed to register as a voter to exercise his or her franchise accordingly.
The NDC Volta Caucus –Ashanti region presented a citation to former President Mahama in appreciation of his dedication and selfless leadership qualities, part of which read: “During the Akosombo Dam Spillage by the VRA last year which affected communities along the Volta Lake, you swiftly went to their rescue.
“Your timely intervention in the form of donation of relief items and temporary shelter was admired by all and appreciated by the victims”.
