Mr Godwin?Edudzi?Tamakloe, Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has described the 2024 transition of power as “therapeutic”, which was welcomed by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on the TV3 current affairs show, Mr. Godwin?Tamakloe praised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for improving the economy through prudent measures implemented by the government’s Economic Management Team.
He emphasised that the NDC’s policies have not come at the expense of the environment, noting the administration’s commitment to sustainable development.
Mr. Godwin?Tamakloe also stressed the fiscal waste of the previous NPP government, pointing out that the funds lost in the collapse of several Savings and Loans institutions could have financed the Free Senior High School programme or the government’s Stress?Free Tertiary?Education loan scheme.
He further criticised the former administration’s handling of the economy, attributing its shortcomings to nepotism and poor fiscal decisions.
According to Mr. Tamakloe, former Finance Minister, Ken?Ofori?Atta’s reliance on the Electronic Levy (E?levy), before turning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) exacerbated the crisis, leaving the economy in a precarious state.
The NPA chief’s remarks underscore a growing sentiment among some NPP members that the change of government has created a more stable economic environment, one that the opposition now views as a positive development for the nation.
He argued that nepotism and cronyism under former President Nana?Addo?Dankwa?Akufo?Addo’s government, particularly the influence of former Finance Minister, Ken?Ofori?Atta, who is his nephew, contributed to the economic downturn.
The NPA chief also noted that many NPP members have privately acknowledged the NDC’s economic gains, citing stable fuel prices and a strengthened cedi as evidence that the current administration’s policies are delivering results.
He concluded that the “therapeutic” change has created an environment where both parties can work toward sustainable development.
