Kwesi Appiah
Ghana Coach, Kwesi Appiah has promised to give opportunities to more players as he builds a strong team to win silverwares.
The returnee named 10 debutants in his first call-up for the qualifier against Ethiopia.
Appiah decided to hand debuts to striker Raphael Dwamena, who bagged a brace, and multiple assist provider, winger Thomas Agyepong.
Left-back Lumor Agbeyenu excelled and lasted the entire duration in the 5-0 drubbing.
“It was a great performance from the players but more players will come into the team,” Appiah said in a post-match interview.
“We have to look at the long term goal and the immediate goal. My ambition is to build a team for the future. In building a strong and formidable side, we have to open our doors to even more players to come in and prove themselves.”
According to the former Black Stars defender, the performance of the new boys gives him confidence that there are a lot more players that are talented and when given the opportunity would put up great displays that will urge us closer to our dream.
“These boys have proved themselves; they faced a very difficult game on their debut but have left no one in doubt over their dependability. Now we know we have these talented youngsters to rely on when the need arises.
Meanwhile, head coach of Ethiopia national team, Ashnefi Bekele has hailed the technical qualities of the Black Stars team following their 5-0 humbling in their qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from skipper Asamoah Gyan, John Boye, Ebenezer Ofori and Raphael Dwamena’s brace condemned the Walias of Ethiopia to a 5-0 defeat in the opening fixture of Group F.
According to the Ethiopian gaffer, the drubbing against the four-time Africa champions is no fluke because they were technically superior.
“Ghana’s team is one of the strongest in Africa with most of the players being professionals and that is the reason why we lost. Most of the players are also young, Bekele told reporters.
“Tactically and technically the Ghanaian players are ahead of us,” he said in a post match interview.”
He added: “It is not a shock score line for us, but it’s a good result for us because Ghana is one of the strongest team in Africa with many professional players.”
Ethiopia will face Sierra Leone in the second round of qualifiers with Ghana playing the Harambee Stars in Nairobi later in the year.
