The Ho Technical University has organised a lecture as part of activities towards the celebration of its 50 years of existence in the course of the year.
The lecture which is under the theme, ‘Becoming a truly entrepreneurial university: Implications for management, staff and students,’ was presented by Professor Dennis Dzansi, Head of Department of Business Support Studies of Central University of Technology Free State, South Africa.
Professor Dzansi dealing with the theme said at the time when higher education institutions are facing pressure to redefine their purpose and role in society and the economy, entrepreneurship has emerged as the preferred tool for effective pursuit of socio-economic wellbeing.
According to him, it is important for technical universities to redesign their curriculum which will reflect the present day knowledge needed to transform the universities.
While it is true that some universities attempted to embed entrepreneurship into their curriculum the approach is rather too narrow because it detracts from the broader concept of the entrepreneurial university.
He said there was the need also to catch the youth young initiative in institutions as part of efforts to develop their entrepreneurial abilities.
As a technical university plans must be drawn to identify and support students and help them shape their concepts into full blown business plans.
That, he stated, will help prepare our graduates to go out there and create jobs for them to demonstrate that they are different breed of students.
Professor Dzansi further argued that people are beginning to agree that to become truly entrepreneurial university, the chosen strategy ought to be embedded in broadly shared values and practices that first and foremost reflect the university’s immediate society’s social needs and that all the world’s people share the benefits of its entrepreneurship.
He called on the heads to attempt to invent a new entrepreneurial university model by studying existing available literature as well as best practices across the continent in our journey to becoming a truly entrepreneurial university.
The Interim Vice Chancellor of the Ho Technical University, Professor Emmanuel Sakyi, in his contribution, acknowledged that technical universities can help shape their transformation by adopting entrepreneurship.
He believes that entrepreneurship has the potential of enabling economic growth, job creation and improving the social welfare of society in which the universities operate.
