Bagre dam spillage
The Volta River Authority (VRA) has advised residents of communities near the White Volta River to take precautionary measures ahead of the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso.
A statement issued by VRA management yesterday said the spillage scheduled to start from Saturday, August 25 to 30, 2018, was expected to cause the river to swell and “ most likely occupy normal flood plains.”
It said, according to communication received from SONABEL; the power utility of Burkina Faso, the spillage had been occasioned by the amount of inflows into the catchment areas of the dam.
“The general public are to take note of this flood alert and take the necessary precautionary measures to avoid being adversely affected by the impeding spillage from the Bagre Dam,” the statement said.
Yesterday, the paper reported that the water level in the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, according to information gathered, was fast reaching its maximum capacity of 235 metres.
Following recent heavy rains in the country, the water level on Monday was more than 233.50 metres, representing about 80 per cent of the capacity, and meaning a little increase in water level could compel SONABEL to spill the dam.
To prevent a disaster, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says it had sensitised communities along the White Volta in partnership with the Ghana Red Cross Society.
As part of proactive measures taken to deal with the situation, the NADMO yesterday dispatched a team to be stationed at Zebilla and Walewale to monitor the situation, and rescue victims of the spillage, if it occurred.
