Six people including two women were early yesterday morning, arrested for open defecation by the environmental sanitation taskforce of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA).
All the six have been slapped with a spot fine of GH¢200.00 each and failure to pay would result in prosecution at the courts.
Two people, Kweku Badu and Addai Owusu, were arrested at Kojokrom, Ebow Kobina and Helina Abban were also arrested at Essipong whilst Zubeiru Seidu and Joe Kojo Essuman, were arrested in Sekondi and Nkotompo, respectively.
Those arrested at Sekondi and Nkotompo, for example, were arrested at the beach.
Confirming the story to the Ghanaian Times, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of STMA, John Laste, reiterated the assembly’s resolve to rid the metropolis of open defecation, warning, “We will not rest on this matter at all.”
He continued, “We are resolved to ensure good sanitation behaviour within the metropolis, and, therefore, we will not allow recalcitrant citizens to thwart our efforts.”
Mr. Laste maintained that the STMA had over the years with the support of the assembly members and traditional leaders educated the communities on open defecation, but, observed that some people had failed to obey the laws of the assembly.
For this year alone, he told the Ghanaian Times that more than 100 people had been arrested and prosecuted at the courts.
The PRO reported that some landlords had converted household toilets in the living rooms and thereby worsening the situation as some residents preferred to defecate at the beaches and busy area.
Mr. Laste however, added that the STMA had earmarked some areas including part of Kojokrom, Ngyiresia, Essaman and New Takoradi for household toilet project on cost-sharing arrangements, announcing that about 100 applications had been received.
The Environmental Health Department, he said, was evaluating the applications
