Residents in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality and its environs were on Monday in the state of grief when seven children died in a gory accident at Dompim on the Agona Nkwanta-Tarkwa highways in the Tarkwa -Nsuaem municipality.
Seven others including a teacher are said to be in critical condition. They were taken to the 37 Military and Effia Nkwanta Regional hospitals, according to emergency officials.
Eyewitnesses said a Mercedes Sprinter bus carrying students from school at Dompim had a head-on collision with haulage truck, returning from a mine site near Tarkwa.
The deceased, aged between three and 14 years are yet to be identified.
Their bodies have been deposited at Effia Nkwanta Regional and Tarkwa Hospital mortuaries respectively, awaiting identification and postmortem examination.
Due to the accident, there was heavy traffic on the Tarkwa highways for several hours.
Anxious parents and relatives upon hearing the sad news rushed to various hospitals in the municipality in search of their school children.
The Western Regional Police Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Chief Superintendent Richard Appiah, confirmed the incident and added that the truck driver, Samuel Agyei is in custody assisting with investigations.
Chief Superintendent Appiah said, at about 4.30pm, on Monday, Samuel Oduro, 44, driver of the Sprinter bus with registration number, GC 2947-09, was on his way from Dompim to Ahwetieso, a suburb of Tarkwa, with pupils and teachers of Leaders Bridge Academy School.
On reaching a section of the road between Dompim and Bonsa, he said, Oduro lost control of his vehicle and veered into the opposite lane and collided with a truck with registration number GT 9135-13 belonging to Shalonis Company Limited.
The MTTU Commander explained that the truck was from Tarkwa en-route to Adamus Mines in the Ellembelle District.
