The Tamale District Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of 13 people, who engaged in illegal electricity connection in the Tamale metropolis.
They are Iddrisu Mahama, Issah Mohammed Hafiz, Amadu Abdul-Fatawu, Inusah Duolisu, Alhassan Saaka, Mohammed Osman, Yakubu Abukari, Kofi Mensah Samson, Sulemana Mohammed Kamil, Ngba Mercy Opoku, Ibrahim Tanimu, Salisu Abukari and Alabami Sahada.
The suspects, who were arrested by the Tamale police for illegally connecting power to their homes, failed to appear before court yesterday.
The Judge, Anthony Assah issued the warrant when only one of the 14 suspects, Halima Sadia P. Mamani, appeared before court.
Issuing the bench warrant, the Judge directed the police to ensure that all the 13 people were arrested and brought before the court.
The Deputy Public Affairs Officer of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), Mr. Alhassan Ababa, disclosed these to journalists at Tamale.
He said that NEDCo in collaboration with the police would apprehend people who would engage in illegal power connection.
Mr Ababa said the rate at which people engage in illegal power connection in the region, particularly Tamale metropolis, was alarming, and that urgent steps were being taken to eliminate the practice.
He indicated that some of the suspects have been involved in the unlawful practice for more than five years.
Mr Ababa said illegal power connections were used in operating high power consuming machines, including corn mills, air conditions and washing machines.
He stated that technical staff of the NEDCo were conniving with the people to ‘steal power’, and warned that the authority would prosecute all those engaged in illegal connections.
Mr. Ababa stressed that NEDCo would do everything possible to stop illegal electricity connections in the region.
He said that the illegal power connection was hampering sustainable power supply in the region, adding that NEDco would intensify its fight against the practice.
