The Technical Committee Chairman of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games, Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko has indicated that all was set for this year’s GUSA Cross Country race to be hosted by the University of Professional Studies (UPSA).
He told the media at the 3rd UPSA Cross – Country race on Saturday that adequate preparations have been made towards this year’s event.
The event will feature nine Universities across the country including University of Ghana ( UG) , University of Cape Coast ( UCC) , University of Education (UEW), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ( KNUST), University of Mines and Technology ( UMaT) , University of Energy, University of Development Studies ( UDS ) and the University of Health and Allied Sciences ( UHAS).
Both male and female athletes from the contesting schools would run a distance of 10km on October 20, 2018 at the UPSA sports field.
He said athletes from the various Universities have been training feverishly in readiness for the games whiles the association also prepares to host a successful event “.
“We have top athletes who will showcase their prowess on the day , Elizabeth Azure of UDS who recently won the Accra marathon is certain to feature as well as other top athletes “, he disclosed.
Mr. Tanko who doubles as the Director of Sports at UDS stressed that his team was ready to defend the title they won in the female competition and also in shape to oust UCC as men’s defending champions.
As part of the UPSA preparation for the event, 10 male and female athletes competed in a 10km distant run to keep them in shape.
Coach of Team UPSA, Ibrahim Ali stated that the training afforded him the opportunity to critically assess his team and to select his final athletes for the main competition on October 20.
“The main purpose of this internal games is to select a final team for the main competition. I am impressed with the output so far but we still have lot of work to do in terms of the time made by the athletes.”
Coach Ali who doubles as Treasurer at GUSA assured all participating schools to train hard and be ready for the competition.
“We have secured accommodation, feeding and logistics for a successful event; we can assure them of a great competition”.
Experienced athlete of the UPSA team, Roderick Delali Adikah told the Times Sports he was ready to lead his colleagues to glory in the competition, stating that it was important they concentrated on enjoying the race and improving on their personal time.
