ABOUT 170 boxers from 14 clubs across the country will fight for honours as Ghana’s boxing league is set to begin today with its first in the series scheduled to run for 26 weeks.
Dubbed “Fist of Fury,” the fight nights would host about 10 juvenile and amateur fights and four professional bouts on every other week when the event rolls off today at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Speaking at the press conference on Wednesday to officially announce the beginning of the league, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Peter Zwennes, said he was excited the boxing league was returning to bring back some excitement into the game.
He said the league in the past produced quality boxers including George Ashie and a host of others and its return was a breath of fresh air in Ghana boxing.
“The boxing league has the potential of developing the sport mainly because it provides the platform and opportunity for budding young boxers to showcase their skills and gain entry into the national team,” he stated.
He added that, the league would run for 13 weeks, take a break and resume for another 13 weeks to make up the 26 weeks of boxing extravaganza.
“There would be three or four professional fights on each night, from contests to national championships and West African union fights,” he explained.
According to him, aside boxing, the Fist of Fury would host musical concerts, fashion show and designing and other innovations to spice up the night.
He expressed appreciation to the consultant to the GBA, Mr Moses Foe Amoaning for his efforts in putting the event together – and the Trust Sports Emporium and others who contributed to the development of boxing.
The boxing league, he said, had come to stay and urged all Ghanaians to jump on board and support the boxers as they rise to the top through the league.
National boxing coach, Ofori Asare, urged the boxers to be disciplined and consider the boxing league as a life-changing opportunity to become world champions in future.
He explained that, it would be a three-pointer league where winners would win three points, with a point for draw while a loser would get no point.
“All known internationally accepted standards and rules of boxing shall be adequately applied to ensure that the quality of the league is top notch,” he stressed.
One of the boxers who would compete in the league, Daniel Lartey said “we are looking forward to a very exciting league” and expressed appreciation to the GBA and other officials for their efforts.
