General Constable Emmanuel Lamptey
A policeman met his untimely death Friday after he was knocked down by a speeding Toyota Land cruiser with registration number GG 1382-17 during snap check duty at Afienya.
General Constable Emmanuel Lamptey attached to Dodowa Divisional Police at Afienya, sustained injuries and was rushed to the Tema General Hospital, but he died while receiving treatment, and the body has been conveyed to the Police hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Two others, Inspector Daniel Adams and General Corporal Raphael Kommeh, who were on duty with General Constable Lamptey, escaped unhurt and managed to arrest the driver of the vehicle, Benjamin Abasah.
A report on the incident indicated that the three policemen were on duty at a section of the Afienya road from Friday 6:00 pm to Saturday 6:00am.
However, at about 7:30 pm, the vehicle traveling from Akosombo towards Tema on top speed knocked down the deceased.
The vehicle dragged him and the crash barrier at the snap check point to a distance of about 50 metres, before crashing into an oncoming Toyota Tundra with number GR 7530-13.
Some residents, who rushed to the scene to catch a glimpse of what happened, expressed concern, and called on government to put in place measures to minimise hazards the police face going about their duties.
The Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Joseph B. Darkwah, said police was investigating the unfortunate incident.
