A basketball clinic organised by Golden Star Resources in partnership with International Development NGO, Giants of Africa, has ended at the Prestea mine site of Golden Star Resources, over the weekend.
The three-day camp dubbed “Prestea Dreams Big” brought together 55 talented young Under-18 basketball players across the country for coaching and mentoring sessions.
Both local and international basketball coaches from Ghana, Nigeria, Benin and Canada were on hand to facilitate the clinic which saw the participants being taken through some of the rudiments of the game – in addition to life skills such as leadership skills among others.
The opening of the basketball clinic coincided with the handing over of a recreational facility to the community of Prestea. The facility will be jointly managed by Golden Star Resources and a team from the community.
The recreational facility comprises two multipurpose basketball courts, a lecture hall and changing rooms which were used for the clinic.
The Group Corporate Affairs Manager of Golden Star Resources Gerard Osei Boakye in an interview noted that the hosting of the basketball clinic in Prestea was part of the process of deepening of Golden Star Resources’ community engagement – especially with young adults within their catchment areas.
According to Mr. Boakye, “it is important that the youth in our catchment areas are empowered with life’s skills and this facility will serve as a rallying point for engaging the youth of Prestea who will be expected to take advantage of the recreational facility to meet and learn from the experiences of employees of Golden Star Resources who will always be available to engage.”
