Naval personnel in a Maritime Combat Power Demonstration
The Western Naval Command (WNC), on Thursday hosted the 2018 edition of Maritime Combat Power Demonstration at the Sekondi Naval Base, to demonstrate its combat power capabilities.
It forms part of activities to be undertaken by students and staff officers of Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Senior Division.
Twenty-seven students from Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Niger, South Africa, led by Lt Col Nichodemus Simpong took part in the demonstration.
The nine-hour exercise, saw the Special Forces demonstrating their skills in rappelling (climbing down a rope by sliding) on GNS Garinga with air support provided by the Ghana Airforce helicopter GHF 696, whiles other teams also conducted firings on Ghana Navy ships comprising GNS Anzone, GNS Chemle, GNS Yaa Asantewaa and Naa Gbewaa at the WNC firing range, about 25 nautical miles from Ghana’s shores.
Briefing the Ghanaian Times, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) at the Western Naval Command (WNC), Commodore Issac Osei Kuffour, explained that the exercise was an annual affair in the calendar of GAFSC to throw spotlights on the role of the navy and its activities within the maritime domain.
The Special Forces, he said, demonstrated their capability in maritime operations with rappel work including interdicting ships engaged in maritime crimes like piracy and armed robbery.
The exercise, which included patrols, was also to rescue distress ships trapped in crimes on the high sea, he said.
“The aim of the exercise is to demonstrate to the students from GAFSC the capabilities of Ghana Navy, and also help them in sharing information and ideas in the maritime domain,” Commodore Kuffour added.
He said that we in the Ghana Navy “train all the time to be able to carry out our tasks in the most efficient manner, even within the limitations. Indeed, the exercise was a success, but, we will do our debriefings and come out with shortfalls to improve our operations in the future.”
Commodore Kuffour said the exercise was a multi-national project by the GAFSC linked to maritime domain on combat power operations.
