Some of the residents cleaning the Sea Light Electoral Area
A programme aimed at improving sanitation in Tema Manhean has been launched by the Tema Traditional Council (TTC) in collaboration with the Patriotic Citizens Association of Tema.
The initiative also seeks to change the attitude of residents towards waste management and outlaw indiscriminate littering in order to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
In line with these objectives, a clean-up exercise would be held every fortnight in one of the seven electoral areas.
At the weekend, Sea Light Electoral Area had its turn, to be followed by Harbour Electoral Area, Homowo Electoral Area, Oninku Electoral Area, Oklo Kofi Electoral Area, Dade Agbo Electoral Area and Bankuman Electoral Area in that order.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times during the exercise, the Tema East Submetro chairman, Joseph Ashitey Larteh, said the exercise would continue till the town was rid of filth and the residents had perfected the “art of cleanliness and long life.”
Mr Larteh who is also a member of the TTC, said they were inspired to sustain the exercise in line with a statement made by the President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that, “sanitation is an everyday activity.”
He noted that as part of the project, a task force would be formed to educate residents on the proper way to dispose off waste, and prosecute recalcitrants to serve as a deterrent.
Mr Larteh commended the Chief Executive Officer of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La, for the immense support to the programme.
He called on corporate bodies in the metropolis to support the project by providing cleaning tools and refuse containers, among other things.
Mr Larteh warned residents who attend natures call at the beach to desist from the act or be brought to book.
There are 25 public and private toilets evenly spread in the town but unfortunately some recalcitrants defecate at the beach.
The Paramount Chief of Tema, NiiAdjeiKraku II, said the initiative was designed to help bring about a sanitation revolution in Tema Manhean.
He therefore urged his subjects to embrace it so as to restore the town to its glorious days.
He said beaches were important assets that could generate a lot of revenue for the state, and therefore called for their protection and effective utilisation.
Nii Adjei Kraku II recalled visits he paid to South Africa, Senegal and the United States of America beaches and the various ways in which they had been harnessed to promote tourism.
