A total of 5,469 drivers have been arrested by the police across the country for various traffic offences from January to October this year as against 3,234 the previous year.
The offences were drunk driving, possessing expired driving documents, failure to wear seat belts while driving, driving without licence, excessive speeding and overloading, among others.
The Staff Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent (Supt) Emmanuel Adu-Boahen disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.
He said out of the 5, 469 drivers arrested, 4,291 were taken to court, 370 awaiting trial, 1,150 under investigation, bench warrant issued for the arrest of 159, who have absconded, 31 jailed and 158 discharged.
The Staff Officer said 3,592 drivers were convicted by the Motor court and sentenced to a total fine of GH¢1,938, 431, which was paid into the consolidated fund.
Supt Adu-Boahen said the MTTD had set up teams to check theindiscipline of drivers, to ensure sanity on the roads.
He lamented that indiscipline on road partly resulted in accidents adding “most of the road crashes are avoidable if drivers adhere to the rules and regulations”.
Supt Adu-Boahen cautioned drivers to abide by road safety regulations, adding that the police would arrest and prosecute offending drivers, to serve as deterrent to others.
He urged stakeholders to partner the police, to reduce carnage on the roads.
