Police escorting some of the suspected criminals to the premises of the regional police command.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Monday arrested a total of 108 suspected criminals and impounded 51 motorcycles, in a swoop it carried out in the Accra metropolis.
The suspects, including five females, between the ages 18 and 65, were apprehended at Tudu, Circle Vodafone, Art Centre, Accra Central.
Quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were retrieved from the suspects, who are currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Patrick Adusei Sarpong, confirmed the arrest to journalists in Accra, yesterday, when he launched Operation Father Christmas, in Accra.
He said the suspects were being screened, and those found culpable, would be prosecuted.
The Regional Police Commander said the police would be vigilant because miscreants would apply their ‘trade’ during Christmas, which is characterised by commercial activities, conventions and other church activities.
DCOP Sarpong cautioned the public to be aware of criminals, who often take advantage of the occasion and carry out their activities.
He said the Command had deployed 1,200 personnel to combat crimes on the streets, at lorry parks, roads and highways, to enforce law and order and control traffic.
DCOP Sarpong said there would also be day and night patrols within the municipality, adding ‘’there will be deployment of personnel to vital installations, including shopping malls, public gathering centres, merry making joints, places of worship, and Accra Central business district and hotels.”
He urged businessmen and businesswomen, who transact business with huge sums of money, to seek police assistance.
DCOP Sarpong appealed to the public to support the police with vital information to enable them to ensure law and order.
The Commanding Officer of the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Fosu-Ackaah, said 400 personnel have been deployed to control traffic in Accra.
He urged drivers to abide by the road safety regulations or would be arrested and prosecuted.
