The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, last Wednesday paid a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, Sheikh (Dr) Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, in Accra to ask for his prayer for God to continue to bless the country’s quest food self-sufficiency and security.
The Chief Imam prayed for Allah’s continuous blessing for abundance of food for growing needs of the people as well as peaceful co-existence in the country.
The minister said the government’s flagship intervention programmes in the agriculture sector, especially, the Planting for Food and Jobs were yielding positive results as prices of food had gone down.
“I pay this courtesy call in recognition of the work we are doing to ensure abundance of food …We ask for your prayers for God to continue to bless us with abundance of food,” Dr Akoto said.
The government introduced the Planting for Food and Jobs to promote the local production of five major food crops that the country has comparative advantage to produce and order to reduce the huge import bills totalling GH?2.2 billion annually.
The flagship programme has shown prospects in agriculture production and job creations in the value chain, hence the need to continue to seek God’s blessings in a rain-fed agriculture environment.
