A member of Parliament’s Education Committee has backed calls for the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, to step aside.
This follows fallouts with lecturers and students that led to violent protests and the subsequent closure of the university.
Dr Clement Apaak said he does not see how Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni can be allowed to remain at post.
He told Roland Walker on the AM Show on the Joy News channel Monday that “the Vice Chancellor has to do the honourable” thing and step aside.
Apaak believes the students’ and lecturers’ interest must supercede the V.C.s’
“…it is one of the best avenues we can resolve this impasse,” the Builsa South MP stressed.
The legislator argued that the university cannot function without the students and the lecturers but can surely do without a V.C.
Dr Apaak said the interest of the V.C. cannot supersede those of the major stakeholders of the university.

“What will happen if the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) decide to go on strike…can the V.C. and other management members go and teach all the students,”? he asked.
What caused the degeneration?
Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni has been accused of dismissing from the university, any person who opposed – whether subtly or overtly – his rise to power a few months ago.
His predecessor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke was removed through a raft of court cases and accusations of procurement breaches.
From the time of his ascension till now, 30 members of staff have been axed; including three top-placed members.
The students, angered by the action of the authorities, staged a week-long protest which degenerated violence and destruction of school property.
The Regional Security Council closed down the university on Thursday for safety reasons, ordering all students to leave by 6:00 pm same day.
What is UTAG’s response?
Speaking on the AM Show, President of UTAG, Dr Opoku Mensah noted that the only news that would appeal to members of the association is the reinstatement of all their members who have been either sacked or had their ranks reduced.
He said UTAG is waiting to hear the outcome of a scheduled meeting of UEW management to decide their next line of action.
He said they [UTAG] is hopeful of a positive outcome.
He also dismissed claims that the three top lecturers who have also been sacked have been reinstated; saying that no formal letter has been received to that effect.
