It can feel like a catch-22: You want to conceal your inflammation with makeup, but the wrong formula can inflame things even more. Stay safe with the three cardinal rules of veiling redness.
1. CHOOSE MINERALS.
They're naturally anti-inflammatory, so mineral powder is your best foundation choice. And because their ingredients lists are spare, they're less likely to contain an irritating filler. Los Angeles makeup artist Jamie Greenberg, an eczema sufferer herself, likes Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder.
2. USE CONCEALER SPARINGLY.
A bit of it is okay, but only where you need it. "The more you schmear the stuff on to cover up, the more you will highlight the uneven texture of the eczema patch, rosacea pustules, or acne bump," says Greenberg, who uses Cover FX Cream Concealer for her own flare-ups.
3. GO GENTLE.
Ditch the brushes; they could make your already irritated skin feel like it's being scraped. Instead, apply makeup using your fingers or a sponge and tap it on lightly, as rubbing will just stoke the fire.
