The Ghana Police Service has restored calm at Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region following an attempted breach of security at the Newmont mining site. The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, 8th January 2025, when some individuals allegedly tried to steal gold from the site.
In the ensuing operation to contain the situation, three suspects lost their lives, while four others sustained injuries. A statement from the Police noted:
The Police confronted the suspects, leading to the death of three persons and injuries to four others.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, worked closely with the Regional Police team via phone throughout the night. He also engaged community leaders and the youth to stabilise the situation, successfully preventing any reprisal attacks or further escalation.
To ensure a comprehensive response, a special investigation team from Accra has been dispatched to the area to probe the incident. Additionally, a reinforcement team has been sent to maintain peace and order in the community.
Acknowledging the religious sensitivities of the situation, the Police confirmed that the three deceased victims are Muslims. The necessary legal processes are being followed to release their bodies to their families for burial later today.
