Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has drawn the attention of the Police Service to the fact that irrespective of the relative calm the country is experiencing now, there remains the threat of criminal activity in the country and the Police must constantly be on guard to be ahead of the deviant few in our communities.
Speaking at this year’s Police end-of-year get-together, dubbed “WASSA”, at the Integrity Square at the Police Headquarters, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia observed that the rampant occurrence of robberies have indeed been arrested but the Police Service ought to continue in their strategic deployment into all parts of the country to ensure that armed robbery activities are dealt with fully.
The Minister for the Interior
The Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery in his speech indicated that recent statistics show that the population of Ghana has increased to 29 million.
By extension, the Police-civilian ratio has also increased from the previous figures of 1- 848 to1- 877.
This development obviously brings an increased strain on the Police Service and posses great challenges to the already challenged service.
This notwithstanding, the Minister emphasized that government has a police recruitment and institutional resourcing programme to deal with the challenges.
The IGP
The Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu reiterated his commitment to offer leadership to the Service to ensure that their dreams and aspirations of making the safety of Ghanaians their joy a reality.
He also stated that the Service will continue to partner with its sister security agencies in the country in their quest to maintain the security of the interior.
WASSA
WASSA is an annual ceremony observed by security agencies with the aim of promoting socialisation after a hectic year’s work.
The occasion is also used to take stock of activities in the year and to strategize for the year ahead.
Awards are presented to both civilian employees and uniformed officers who have excelled in their various fields of endeavour.
