Addressing a group of Kokomba Chiefs at the Banquet Hall of the Flag Staff House during a courtesy call on him by the chiefs numbering about 50, President Akufo-Addo said at Independence, Ghana had just about five regions, however, the number was increased to ten (10) in the wisdom of the then government to enhance the effective management and distribution of the resources of the country. He added that it is for the same reason that his administration has decided to add up to the current number of ten (10).
Request for a New Region
The Chiefs, opinion leaders and people of the Northeastern corridor of the Northern Region speaking through Philip Dibabe, Secretary to the Saboba Traditional Area, requested of the President to consider creating a new region out of the current Northern Region to be known as the Northeast Region. Their request they said is purely based on the large land space of the Northern Region which posed administrative challenges. The Chiefs were of the opinion that the creation of the Northeast Region will go a long way to improve the lot of the people of the region.
President’s Response
President Akufo Addo in response to the request of the Chiefs expressed surprise at why the chiefs have waited this long to propose the creation of a new region considering the fact that the process of creating such new regions has strict guidelines prescribed by the 1992 constitution and that his administration has been advocating the creation of new regions since taking off nearly a year now. He however assured the chiefs that he will kick start the process after the Yuletide by forwarding their petition to the Council of State to add up to the process that has already begun for the creation of four new regions.
