The National Service Scheme has encouraged graduates deployed to do their compulsory one-year national service to accept places they have been posted to.
Head of Public Affairs of the Scheme David Prah, in reaction to complaints that some service persons refuse posting to distant and remote areas, pleaded with new personnel to accept the postings, stressing that they will not be posted outside Ghana.
“I will plead that northern Ghana, Afram Plains are all part of Ghana. We’re talking about serving Ghana so we’re not going to post anybody to Cote d’Ivoire or Burkina Faso or Togo,” he stated on 3FM’s Sunrise on Tuesday.
According to Mr. Prah, the postings are done bearing in mind factors that will allow the personnel to function at optimum, supporting the needs of government.
“Postings or deployment are characterized by the programme of study. That is the person’s knowledge and skill, the fragility of the person and other factors that may be determined by the [National Service Scheme] board, especially the country’s philosophy [as well as] current government programme to support government in that direction,” he said.
He stated, for instance, that 5,000 national service personnel have been posted to support the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs Programme while another 500 have been posted to work at National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP).
He disclosed that NSS has deployed 85,708 prospective national service personnel, in all, to function in various sectors of the economy to support both the public and private sector.
He noted that 75,637 (88.25%) are in public sector while 10,070 (11.75%) have been deployed to the private sector.
Mr. Prah indicated that the deployment covers various institutions including the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Volta River Authority (VRA), Road Traffic Management and Agriculture as well as Ghana Education Service.
He cautioned service personnel to be mindful of the National Service Scheme Act 426, 1980, which suggests that “it is mandatory for all graduates who have completed accredited tertiary institutions in the country to undergo one year mandatory service”.
Meanwhile, registration for this year’s National Service started Friday, July 20 and will end Friday, August 24 while personnel are expected to commence work on September 4.
