The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ledzokuku Constituency, Dr. Bernard Oko-Boye, has taken a swipe at De-Eye Group, a group purported to be a pro-NPP militia group.
The group, headed by a former personal bodyguard of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was discovered in a Joy News documentary to have been operating at the Christiansborg Castle in Accra.
Many, especially in the Minority, have condemned the act, calling for the head of the President, but the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, dismissed that the group is a vigilante group, though he admitted the use of the Castle was illegal.
According to the Minister, De-Eye Group is only a group of job-seekers who explore opportunities for its members.
But the Ledzokuku MP thinks the conduct of the group is borne out of arrogance which should not be allowed to fester merely by their association with a party in power.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day, the board chair of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital noted that the operations, which were paraded as job-seekers, should not have been allowed in the former seat of government.
“Now, this eye group their operation or history of having met and operated at the Christiansborg Castle, my brother, it is unacceptable, it is a grave error which shouldn’t have happened, but because I appreciate how politics is done in this country, I’m not surprised that someone who was related to us manage to bring people there under the guise of giving them a job,” he said
He admits that the conduct of the group is informed by the relationship it has with the government but regrets their relationship with the group is now bringing the government bad press.
“Another revelation is that National Security was engaging them, trying to get them out tells you that we knew them. Honestly, they were treated with kids gloves because of their relationship with us, but you see, that leniency with which we dealt with them is bringing us all this negative reportage,” he noted.
According to Dr. Oko-Boye, governments must be strong and firm in dealing with people who try to create their own stuff because of the relationship they have with them.
“De-Eye Group are being arrogant because of the history we’ve had, but this time, we have to be strict and firm. What puts me off is that they even were taking money from those they claim they were helping. Even if you want to help other citizens get a job, do you go to operate at the Christiansborg castle?” he quizzed.
He recommends that politicians put in place a strong code of conduct for people who work with them even before they get into power.
He believes vigilantism can be solved “if we will be honest as politicians”.
