The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly says there are plans to pull down the Kisseman market for re-development.
Earlier, there were claims by occupants of the market that the structure was being handed over to a private owner.
But speaking to Johnnie Hughes on 3FM’s Community Connect, Assembly member of the area, Bright Avadzi, said there is no such plan, and that the Assembly is only seeking to give the market a facelift.
“Some people claim maybe we are trying to take the place, so that we give to an outsider which is not true.”
“Now the Assembly wants to take it up and develop it into a modern market,” he announced.
Mr. Avadzi noted that it was the priority of the Assembly with support from some community leaders to re-develop the market, and that the decision was taken in consultation with various stakeholders.
“Even before the Assembly will even come in, we had a meeting with the leaders of the community; that is the chief and elders together with the market leadership to brief them about the project we are bringing. They are all happy.
“It is some two or three people who sadly are not trying to understand because they feel maybe, if the market was constructed, maybe, people from outside will come into it,” Mr. Avadzi said.
The Assemblyman stressed that the MCE for the area, Boye Laryea, has given assurance that he would give priority to those operating currently in allocating market spaces when finished.
He further indicated that work on the new market will take four months, and that the market women have been relocated to give way for the construction.
