Two senior lectures at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor are to appear before the university’s Disciplinary Committee for their alleged involvement in the Sex for Grades scandal.
The two lecturers were implicated in the BBC’s ‘Sex for Grades’ documentary which captured lecturers of some top universities in West Africa allegedly trading grades for sex.
Following the airing of the documentary, there were calls from the public for the University of Ghana to penalize the two for their actions.
As a result, the university constituted a committee to investigate the involvement of the two senior lecturers in the scandal.
The two lecturers were subsequently interdicted by the university.
In a statement from the university dated November 20, it said per the committee’s investigations, a prima facie evidence has been found against the two.
“A fact-finding committee set up to investigate two University of Ghana lecturers – Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor – following a BBC documentary titled ‘Sex for Grades’ has found prima facie evidence of breaches of the University’s Code of Conduct and Statutes, as amended, and has recommended that the matter be brought before the University’s Disciplinary Committee.”
According to the statement, the committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Vida Akoto-Bamfo noted in its report to the Vice-Chancellor that there is prima facie evidence of misconduct against Professor Gyampo and Dr. Butakor contrary to Paragraph 6.4 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff of the University of Ghana.
The code stipulates that “Academic Staff shall at all times comport themselves in ways that will enhance their image and that of the University.”
The Committee further found prima facie evidence of misconduct contrary to Statute 42(1)( e )(ii) of the University of Ghana Statutes, which states that “…no member of the University shall engage in a course of vexatious conduct that is directed at one or more specific individuals, and that is known to be unwelcome…”.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor has accepted the Committee’s findings and forwarded the report to the Disciplinary Committee for Senior Members, the appropriate adjudicatory body, for immediate action.
The University of Ghana further reiterates its commitment to rooting out sexual harassment and misconduct.
“The University would like to assure all stakeholders that it will not shield any member of the community found to have contravened these provisions.”
