Thomas Partey impresses amid Ghanaian struggles in Premier League

After enjoying a good round of games in the English top flight last weekend, Ghanaian players struggled to impose themselves on matchday nine in the Premier League.

Antoine Semenyo and Thomas Partey managed to produce a spark for their respective clubs in what, otherwise, looked like a completely flat display.

3Sports looks back at how Ghanaian stars fared in the weekend’s Premier League games.

 

Arsenal, Thomas Partey

Saliba’s suspension meant right-back Ben White was made to move into the centre-back role, leaving Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta to move Thomas Partey into the right-back position.

Although a makeshift right-back and coming up against a deceptively nifty forward in Luis Diaz, Partey made the most tackles of any player on the pitch (5) and also won nine out of his contested 16 ground duels, in addition to winning four of five aerial battles.

Partey seemed at home in an unorthodox right-back role as Arsenal were held at home in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

 

Bournemouth, Antoine Semenyo

Still the go-to man for the Cherries, Semenyo was unable to find the back of the net in Bournemouth’s visit to the Midlands.

But what Semenyo, however, managed to do was prove to be a menace to Villa’s defence from the left wing. Semenyo made two key passes, which was the most of any Bournemouth player, and also won seven out of his 10 contested ground duels in a largely physical game at Villa Park as both sides settled for a point after a 1-1 draw.

 

Brighton and Hove Albion, Tariq Lamptey

After injury setbacks and tactical omissions, Tariq Lamptey made his first appearance of the season for Brighton in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Wolves.

Lamptey was introduced as a substitute with ten minutes to go and attained a perfect pass rate of 100% and provided the assist for the Seagulls’ second goal against Wolves, although they blew a two-goal lead in the dying embers.

The right-back will hope he did enough to impress Fabian Hurzeler with his impactful cameo.

 

Leicester City, Jordan Ayew & Fatawu Issahaku

Last week’s hero Jordan Ayew started Leicester’s game against Nottingham Forest from the bench as he lasted 22 minutes.

Different to last weekend, the forward struggled to lay down a marker at the King Power on Friday as Leicester lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Issahaku was rewarded with a place in the starting line-up after he had single-handedly orchestrated Southampton’s fall last weekend. However, the former Sporting CP wide-man failed to hit those heights as he was relatively shut out by Forest.

 

Southampton, Kamaldeen Sulemana

The winger came off the bench at the Etihad Stadium as the Saints lost narrowly to defending champions Manchester City. Sulemana was well-marshalled by City’s players and not given enough room to operate.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus began to serve his three-game suspension as West Ham beat Man United 2-1, although Summerville was seen racing towards the suspended Kudus to share a warm embrace with him after the former scored.

In South England, under-fire Palace boss Oliver Glasner left Jeffery Schlupp out on the bench as Palace secured their first win of the season in a 1-0 win over Spurs.
