The late Akua Donkor, founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), was reportedly diagnosed with respiratory issues at Nsawam Hospital prior to her eventual death.
This is according to Ernest Frimpong Manso, also known as Adakabre, who made the revelation while speaking on TV3’s early morning show, TV3 New Day.
Adakabre, who was Akua Donkor’s running mate in the 2020 election, revealed that she was referred to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital), where she unfortunately passed away.
Akua Donkor’s passing occurred after 10 PM on Monday, October 28, 2024. The news of her death quickly spread on social media, with many people sharing their condolences with her family and supporters. Many Ghanaians have also taken to asking for the cause of Akua Donkor’s death, as there was no prior news of her ill health.
There is some confusion surrounding Akua Donkor’s age, as various sources have reported different ages. While some reports state she was 83 years old, others claim she was 69 or 70 years old. To further confound the issues around the age, the abusuapanyin (family head) of the deceased’s family, Nana Yaw Poku, claimed Akua Donkor was 90 years old in an interview with the Accra-based Onua FM.
Despite the discrepancy, one thing is certain: Akua Donkor left an indelible mark on Ghanaian politics.
At the time of her passing, Akua Donkor was actively preparing for the 2024 elections, where she was number 3 on the ballot paper, with just 39 days left until the polls.
