KNUST’s College of Health Sciences to play key role in training health professionals for Agenda 111 – Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, says the Agenda 111 project seeks to employ over 70, 000 health professionals to improve the health status of Ghanaians.

The project, according to him, would increase access to healthcare delivery in the country.

The objective of the Agenda 111 as envisioned by President Akufo-Addo is to ensure that Ghanaians in every district and region in the country have access to quality healthcare services.

It was aimed at building and equipping as many hospitals as possible to advance Ghana’s agenda of becoming a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in medical care in the West African sub-Region.

In all, a total of 111 hospitals are expected to be constructed nationwide, each costing about US$16.88 million, and were scheduled to be executed within 18 months.

However, the projects have not been completed within the stipulated time, yet several of these hospitals are at various stages of completion.

The sector Minister who was speaking at the launch of endowment fund at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) reiterated the government’s commitment to achieve universal healthcare.

“The last time I checked, the Agenda 111 project which is expected to build over 100 district hospitals across the country, six new regional hospitals and three psychiatric hospitals in the 3 belts are expected to employ over 70, 000 health professionals.

“Who is better positioned to help raise these professionals than the College of Health Sciences, KNUST you have a critical role to play to make the world a better place for those who are coming after us,” he noted.

Dr. Okoe Boye lauded the initiative by the College of Health Sciences, stressing the government is much committed in supporting enterprises that seek to strengthen the health sector.

Pro Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor David Asamoah, indicated the establishment of the endowment fund serves as a financial provision to support brilliant but needy students to access health education.

He called on individuals, corporate entities to support the fund to help enhance health education in the school.
